Retelling Red is a short-story illustration project completed during my time at university.
Little Red Riding Hood is a classic childhood tale that warns children about the dangers of going out on your own and the threat potential strangers may pose. However, in most retellings that I read as a child, Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother are left relatively unscathed. In the real world, the outcome isn’t always a happy one.
Taking inspiration from modern children’s storybook illustrators, like Jon Klassen, and the dramatics of a Brother’s Grimm tale, I emphasized the importance of being aware of your surroundings by illustrating a textural environment that leaves clues that a young audience can clearly follow.
